Last week we visited Su’s friend Kate from college. Kate has been living in El Bolson for the past year and a half working with a permaculture organization building a school. The large group that we have been travelling with recently has mostly broken up at this point. Five of us went down to El Bolson. We rented a really nice cabin up in the mountains overlooking the town. One of our companions is David, from Umass, who is a chef. The first night in El Bolson, we rented the cabin, and went to the supermarket and filled the fridge with supplies for David to cook up a feast. We feasted on a delicious steak, sausage and potato dinner and watched TV for a few hours.
The next day we cooked up a huge breakfast and spent the day walking off the food. We hiked to a lookout called Cabeza del Indio, or Indian Head. Take a look. The views of the town along the way were really nice. The area has lots of wild berry bushes growing everywhere and is known for its jellies, chocolates and ice cream.
The next day we went to the local craft fair and sampled some of the local food. Afterwards we met up with Kate at her school. The school buildings are being constructed out of adobe because it’s a cheap material and environmentally friendly. The local soil is rich in clay, which is the main ingredient in the adobe. Aside from the school, they are also building a bakery. The money made from the bakery will be used to support the school. We lent a hand for the afternoon plastering the oven in the bakery.
